Or they meet the wrecking ball. So opines Stewart Brand in his 1994 classic How Buildings Learn, What Happens After They're Built. Either a building's design and construction are adaptable, or they become obsolete and destined for demolition. San Francisco's building stock includes many historic buildings which are candidates for reinvention, and to date Noe Vista has resurrected 4 structures, renovating and updating the systems and layouts and re-imagining the spaces. Three are former religious buildings: a rectory, a convent, and a church, which are now leased to unique businesses which continue to use the structures in community-oriented ways, as a live-work space for artists, a women-centric clubhouse, a tea house, a movement studio, a healing arts community.
Each of the 4 buildings are in the process of being designated as San Francisco Landmarks by the S. F. Board of Supervisors and the Historic Commission.
